Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, is set to host the 7th edition of its Inter-Union Sports Competition, tagged the VC Unity Cup 2026, in a renewed push to strengthen staff cohesion and promote healthy living across campus.
The competition will bring together four staff unions of the university: the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT). Participants will compete in 11 sporting events including football, volleyball, basketball, table tennis, badminton, chess, draughts, darts, athletics, shot put, and discus.
The competition is scheduled to officially open on Monday, May 18, 2026, with a football clash between SSANU and NASU. Organizers said the opening fixture is expected to set the tone for what promises to be an intense and entertaining tournament, drawing large turnouts from staff, students, and university management.
Speaking ahead of the games, the University Director of Sports Abubakar Abdussalam noted that the event embodies the university’s commitment to fostering unity and work-life balance among staff. The VC Unity Cup, he said, provides a platform for friendly rivalry while encouraging physical fitness and teamwork beyond academic and administrative duties.
The last edition held in 2023 saw ASUU emerge as the overall champion. With renewed participation and expanded sporting categories this year, the unions are expected to battle for the title under what organizers describe as a spirit of sportsmanship and mutual respect.
University management reaffirmed its support for the competition, describing it as a vital tradition that reinforces unity among the university’s workforce. The Directorate of Sports urged all staff to turn out in large numbers to support their respective unions as the VC Unity Cup 2026 gets underway.
