By Muzammil Dalha Yola

Sokoto State athletes have emerged overall winners of this year's UBEC Northwest sports competition for inter-primary schools boys and girls. The three-day tournament was held at Dutse, NYSC camp, Jigawa State, and attracted six states in attendance, with only the Kebbi State contingent failing to show up.

The competition, which is being organized by the national headquarters of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in conjunction with the Nigerian School Sports Federation (NSSF), was designed to "catch them young". Sokoto won five gold medals and one silver medal to occupy the first position. Kano took the second position with one gold and two silver medals, while Kaduna and Jigawa came third and fourth with one gold and one silver medal, and Jigawa with one silver and two bronze medals, respectively.

Katsina and Zamfara took the fifth and sixth positions, with Katsina getting one silver medal, and Zamfara failing to pick any medals. The winners and runners-up of each event in football, basketball, volleyball, and handball have qualified to represent the Northwest in the national finals scheduled to hold later in the year in Abuja.

In the closing ceremony match, Kano defeated its Kaduna State counterpart 1-0 in an interesting encounter to increase their gold medal tally. Speaking shortly after the final match, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Hajia Aisha Garba, described the championship as part of UBEC's commitment to improving and developing various sporting activities at grassroots levels across the country.

Hajia Aisha Garba, who was represented by the Deputy Zonal Director of the commission in charge of the Northwest, Mrs. Augustina Sanchi, said the commission will continue to play a vital role in complementing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's efforts regarding sports development in the country. While congratulating the winners for their victory, she urged the losers to redouble their efforts in future tournaments.

Some other dignitaries who spoke at the occasion commended the leadership of UBEC under Hajia Aisha Garba for her foresight and commitment to the development of sports in the country. Highlights of the event included the presentation of trophies, medals, and certificates to the deserving states.
