Match-Fixing Concerns: Group Urges NLO To Closely Monitor Crucial Fixtures At Maracana B

By Muzammil Dalha Yola

The Nationwide League One (NLO) has been urged to closely monitor two crucial fixtures during Matchday 9 at the Maracana B, in order to prevent match-fixing and manipulation on Tuesday.

The matches feature a three-way race for the playoffs: top-ranked Seamoriow FC will face fifth-placed ACT Sports di Oyibo, while second-placed Franceex United takes on third-placed Bison FC. Both matches are set to kick off simultaneously at 11 am, with Seamoriow FC vs. ACT Sports di Oyibo taking place at the Legacy Pitch, National Stadium Surulere, and Franceex United vs. Bison FC at the Maracana Stadium.

These matches had previously been rescheduled due to a brake failure on the ACT Sports di Oyibo team bus—an incident classified as Force Majeure in football terms—that delayed the kickoff by an hour.

Kayode Thomas, spokesperson for a non-governmental sports body under the Nigeria Football & Other Sports Interest Group (NFOSIG), has called on the NLO to take action.

"It has been an interesting one and a half months of quality grassroots football, showcasing many young talents across 32 centers in Nigeria," he stated.

"As the matches at different centers reach their final day, with teams qualifying for the playoffs, it is essential to protect the reputation of the NLO. The Secretariat must be proactive in its oversight."

"Currently, the standings show Seamoriow FC and Franceex United are tied with 19 points, while Bison FC has 18 points. However, Seamoriow FC holds the edge due to a superior goal difference of plus one. This makes for an exciting final day, but the NLO must remain vigilant against any actions that could compromise the integrity of Africa's largest grassroots domestic league."

"The NLO must keep a close watch on both matches on Tuesday to guard against match-fixing and manipulation at either the Legacy Pitch or Maracana Stadium."

"We urge the NLO Secretariat not only to monitor these two matches but also to impose the strictest sanctions possible on any actions or practices that could bring the game into disrepute, regardless of who is involved."
