The Kano edition of the Steron national community development football competition flagged off on Tuesday in all wards across the 15 local governments of Kano Central. The football competition, sponsored by Steron Community Development Foundation, features grassroots football clubs drawn from the wards.
Speaking to sports writers in Kano, Abubakar Sadiq Omar, Managing Director of Steron Resources International, said the main motive behind the football competition is to use football as a vehicle to empower Nigerian youths. He stated that the Steron football project is part of the company's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), aiming to assist youths in achieving their football dreams and making life more meaningful.
The Head of the Foundation, Mr. Musa Mohammed, represented Omar and said, "We recognize the power of football as a strong national unifier and tool for empowerment. We've hosted similar competitions in other parts of the country, and Kano will be exceptional. We've invited football scouts to identify talented players and help them pursue professional football development."
The competition will offer free medical services to players, coaches, and fans. The Kano State Football Association (KSFA) described the Steron football project as a comprehensive package for football development in the state.
The tournament kicks off on March 31st and runs through the first week of April 2026. It's an open competition without age restrictions, except for players who have featured in national major football leagues.
The chairman of KSFA Youths Competition Committee, Hassan Garo, said, "The tournament will start at ward level, with winners proceeding to local government and then state level. We've made provisions for security and will prioritize making the competition entertaining."
The matches have kicked off in designated ward centres across the state, with the opening match of the inter-local government phase at Sani Abacha Stadium.
