As the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) clocks three years under the leadership of President Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON), the football community reflects on the significant strides made. Gusau assumed office on September 29, 2022, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a commitment to football development.
Under Gusau's administration, Nigerian football has witnessed a resurgence of success. The country qualified for AFCON 2023 and reached the finals, narrowly losing to the host nation, Côte d'Ivoire 2-1. The women's national team won the WAFCON trophy in Morocco, and Nigerian clubs have consistently performed well in CAF competitions. This performance has maintained our coefficient status of four slots representing Nigeria in CAF club competitions
The NFF has made significant investments in improving the standard of Nigerian leagues, including the Premier Football League, Nigeria National League, Nationwide League One, Women's League, and Beach Soccer. The federation has also attracted sponsorship and partnerships to support football development in the country.
Gusau's administration has prioritized the welfare of match officials, ensuring prompt payment for their services. The reintroduction of CAF-approved coaching licenses courses has also been a major milestone, with many grassroots coaches benefiting from the program.
The NFF under Gusau has maintained transparency and accountability, with staff receiving their salaries and wages regularly. The administration's open-door policy has fostered a sense of trust and cooperation within the football community.
The NFF has initiated various youth development programs, including the U-13, U-15, and U-19 competitions, aimed at identifying and nurturing young talents. The construction of a world-standard camp for national team players is also underway.
Gusau's leadership qualities have earned him recognition beyond Nigeria. He was elected President of the West African Football Union (WAFU), a testament to his vision and commitment to football development in the region.
While Gusau's administration has faced challenges, the positives far outweigh the negatives. The football community remains patient and supportive, recognizing the efforts being made to move Nigerian football forward.
As the NFF continues to work towards its objectives, the upcoming World Cup qualifiers are a major focus. With two matches remaining, the federation is working tirelessly to ensure Nigeria secures a spot in the tournament.
Gusau's three-year tenure has been marked by significant achievements and a renewed sense of purpose in Nigerian football. As the NFF continues to strive for excellence, the football community remains optimistic about the future, thanks to the leadership of President Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON).
