It's disheartening to note that during the WAFCON victory reception by the federal government at Aso Rock Villa, no mention was made about the efforts of the Super Falcons' Head Coach and the Nigeria Football Federation, who toiled day and night to ensure that the Super Falcons came home victorious. Let me commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for showering the players, technical, and backroom staff with cash gifts, houses, and national honours. The team deserved all they got from the government for their resilience, discipline, and patriotism.
This write-up stems from flaws observed at the reception at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. I wonder why those who made recommendations for the cash gifts didn't deem it proper to give the Head Coach, Justine Madugu, higher cash gifts, as is usually the practice, than the players . He got half of what the players received, which might not have been the case if the coach was a foreigner. The worst-case scenario would have been for them to give the Head Coach the same amount as the players. If the Super Falcons had lost that final game, he would've been under scrutiny with calls for his sack. The man showed some tactical dexterity to turn around a game that was slipping away with a 2-0 deficit down to host Morocco at halftime to win 3-2.
The coach and support staff played a major role in the team's success, yet were sidelined in the spotlight. Even the NFF, despite its flaws, deserves credit for supporting the campaign by organizing a series of quality friendly games for the team prior to WAFCON, not to mention behind-the-scenes actions during the tournament. Let's learn to commend as we also condemn them if they perform below expectations. Victories are team efforts: celebrations should reflect that not just honour the players but also those who sweated with them and those who worked behind the scenes. Let's build a culture that appreciates everyone who contributes to national glory.
