The National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, has visited Kano State to convey the condolences of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government to the government and people of Kano State over the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 22 athletes and officials returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun.
In a press release signed by Dr (Mrs) Kehinde Ajayi FCAI, ANIPR Director Information & PR National Sports Commission revealed that, Mallam Dikko, who had just returned from London where he attended the Unity Cup final and held strategic meetings to facilitate domestic sports, was visibly shaken by the news of the accident. He headed straight to Kano upon arrival in Nigeria, where he was welcomed by the Deputy Governor of the State, Comr. Aminu Abdulsallam Gwarzo.
The Deputy Governor was joined by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the head of service, commissioners, officials of the Kano State Sports Commission, and other top government functionaries. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf also conveyed his appreciation from Saudi Arabia, where he is currently on hajj.
Mallam Dikko visited the families of the deceased athletes at various locations across the city and also visited the nine recuperating athletes at the Murtala Muhammed Hospital. He conveyed the condolences of the President and the Federal Government to the grieving families and athletes.
The NSC Chairman voiced the Commission's commitment to supporting the families and the recuperating athletes. He stated that the NSC would work with the state government to come up with a proper framework to support the families of the dead and the rehabilitation of the survivors.
Mallam Dikko emphasized the need for enhanced safety and welfare of participating athletes before, during, and after major sporting events. He prayed that such a tragedy would never happen again and assured the people of Kano State of the President's and the Federal Government's solidarity.
The Deputy Governor expressed the state's appreciation to President Tinubu and the Federal Government for their concern and continuous support. He welcomed the NSC's commitment to working with the state government to provide the necessary support to the families.
The NSC Chairman's visit to Kano State is a demonstration of the Federal Government's commitment to supporting the people of Kano State during this difficult time. The NSC's efforts to enhance the safety and welfare of athletes will help prevent such tragedies in the future.
