The Nationwide League One (NLO) has taken decisive action against match fixing allegations at the Maracana B Lagos Centre. In a letter signed by NLO Chief Operating Officer Olushola Ogunnowo, the Secretariat announced the cancellation of matches involving four clubs suspected of compromising their games.
The NLO Secretariat received a match officials' report indicating that the clubs' behaviour brought the game into disrepute. Despite matches being played simultaneously to avoid compromise, the investigation revealed suspicious patterns. BISON FC, which had conceded only 7 goals in 8 matches, suddenly conceded 9 goals to Franceex FC. Similarly, Seamoriow FC's unusual 9-goal score after averaging 2 goals per match raised concerns.
The NLO Secretariat applied Article 4.17, resulting in severe penalties. The matches played by the clubs on Match Day 9 have been cancelled, including:
1. ACT di Sports Ohio FC Lagos 2-9 Seamoriow FC Lagos
2. BISON FC Lagos 0-9 Franceex FC Lagos
Each of the four clubs involved has been fined N500,000, payable to the NLO account. Furthermore, all matches played by these clubs in the current 2025 season have been cancelled.
Players and officials who participated in the matches have been banned for two years. The NLO will release their names and pictures in due course.
The four clubs involved are:
1. ACT di Sports Ohio FC Lagos
2. Seamoriow FC Lagos
3. BISON FC Lagos
4. Franceex FC Lagos
The NLO's swift action demonstrates its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the game. The league's efforts to prevent match fixing will likely have a positive impact on the sport.
The NLO's decision to cancel matches and suspend clubs involved in match fixing allegations sends a strong message about the importance of fair play. The league's continued vigilance will help ensure a level playing field for all participants.
