Turkey's Sports Minister Osman Askin Bak has fiercely denounced UEFA's two-match ban on footballer Merih Demiral, branding it "unfair," "biased," and "purely political." The ban was imposed due to Demiral's ultra-nationalist gesture during Euro 2024, which UEFA deemed violating the rules of decent conduct.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Bak expressed outrage, stating, "We condemn UEFA's unfair and biased decision, which has no legal basis." He added, "This decision is a clear example of political interference in sports."
The ban has sparked a diplomatic row between Turkey and Europe, with Turkish officials threatening repercussions. "We will not remain silent in the face of this injustice," Bak warned. "We will take necessary measures to protect our rights and interests."
Demiral's gesture, associated with the Turkish right-wing extremist group Grey Wolves, has been a contentious issue. While UEFA has deemed it offensive, Turkey views it as a symbol of national pride.
The ban has ruled Demiral out of Turkey's quarter-final match against the Netherlands, a significant blow to the team's chances. Turkey's football federation has announced plans to appeal the decision, while Bak has called for international support.
As tensions escalate, the incident has raised questions about the intersection of politics and sports, with many criticizing UEFA's decision as an infringement on freedom of expression. The fallout continues to unfold, with significant implications for the world of football and beyond.
